It's the moment of truth, the moment to lie, the moment to live and the moment to die. The moment to fight, the moment to fight, to fight, to fight, to fight. To the right, to the left, we will fight to death. To the edge of the earth, it's a brave new world from the last to the first.

-Thirty Seconds to Mars, "This is War"

"ATTACK!"

The cry rang out loud and clear, and the battle to decide everyone's future began. Shimmerstar stood in a line beside Stone, beside Stripestar, Wildstar, beside Timeflyer, Pain, and Ashflame. They all glanced at one another, nodding to each other. Their eyes were narrowed, shining, and their claws were extended. The Dark Forest burst past their boundaries, entering StarClan's territory. And who led them? A growl escaped Shimmerstar's throat, her eyes fixed on his dull white pelt.

"STARCLAN, ATTACK!"

And then, all hell broke loose.

She noticed another cat surge forward, charging toward Whitestar; Ashflame. She followed him, gracefully dodging poorly-aimed blows from Dark Forest cats. However, just as they'd both reached him, he pulled back and disappeared into the crowd.

"We need to find him. The quickest way to end a battle is through the leader," Shimmerstar spoke quickly, her eyes darting to Ashflame. He gave her a brief nod, then disappeared into the crowd. Claws scored her shoulder, forcing her backward. She quickly ducked, avoiding extended claws. She looked up at her attacker, letting out a loud snarl. Thistlefang.

"You think you can attack me in my own territory and expect to win?" She hissed, lashing out with her front paws and clawing his shoulders. He pulled back, his lips drawn back in a snarl,

"Of course! I killed you once, and I'll do it again! Hawkstar!"

There was a brown haze, and suddenly Shimmerstar was pinned to the ground. The former ThunderClan leader had a paw pressed to her throat, claws unsheathed. His blue eyes were dull, however, confusing the former RiverClan leader.

"Pathetic!" She spat out, "You need your son to do your dirty work? Are you that incapable, Thistlefang?!"

"Kill her!" He snarled to Hawkstar, who turned to glare at his father. He looked back down at her, looking incredibly bored.

"Swallowstar's next," he spoke, venom lacing his tone. The hatred in his voice didn't reach his eyes, however. She ignored it and kicked the brown tom's stomach, sending him stumbling backward.

"RiverClan will not be appointing a new leader today," she snarled, her teeth bared. She wasted no time in leaping forward, pinning him to the ground. He made no effort in trying to fight back.

"Scared?" She taunted, her tail lashing behind her. Before she could even think of killing him, she was knocked aside. Tripping over her paws as she stumbled, she collapsed onto the ground.

"Hawkstar, get up you good-for-nothing foxheart! Fight her!" Thistlefang snarled, keeping Shimmerstar pinned to the ground. She squirmed beneath his paws, desperate to free herself. Suddenly, Hawkstar turned on Thistlefang and slashed at his chest. The grey tom jumped back, surprised.

"Hawkstar, what the hell are you doing?! Attack her!"

Hawkstar threw his head back in a chilling fit of laughter. Shimmerstar slunk away from Thistlefang, eyeing his son's movements. This could all be one big act. They could be trying to convince her that Hawkstar had switched sides.

Hawkstar's laughing ceased, and he coldly stared into Thistlefang's blazing amber eyes.

"I'm not your servant, dad! You treat me like I did nothing successful in my life, when in reality I did far more than you EVER could have done! You.. you manipulated me, you abused me, you turned me into this.. this MONSTER! I lost all of my friends, I never had any respect because of you! You made me carry out your plans.. and I obeyed you.. NOT THIS TIME!" He snarled, keeping his father at bay. He looked back toward Shimmerstar, his eyes full of mixed emotions.

"Go," he muttered quietly. However, it was just loud enough for Shimmerstar to hear. Bewildered by his sudden change of heart, she turned and fled. She could hear Thistlefang screeching at his son. She turned back toward them, snarling loudly,

"I'll deal with you later, Thistlefang! I have more important business to attend to right now!" With that, she spun around and disappeared back into the mass of cats. As she avoided claws from every angle, she was tackled to the ground. Claws slashed at her neck, but she moved her head in just enough time that the cat clawed at her cheek instead.

"Get off of me," she snarled, kicking at the cat's stomach with her hind legs.

"That ain't gon' do," the cat retorted, digging his claws into her shoulders. Shimmerstar winced, squirming beneath the tom. She tried to slash at his face, but he pinned her paw down with lightning fast movements.

"Too slow," he smirked, leaping off of her and grabbing her by the scruff. Shimmerstar thrashed, trying to force the tom into letting her go. She felt claws sink into her haunches, forcing her to the ground again. She looked up only to see a black cat joining the tom, who finally released her scruff.

"It's 'bout time ye got here, lazy fishbrain!" The tom snarled to the other cat, who simply rolled his eyes and scoffed.

Fishbrain? That's a RiverClan insult!

Shimmerstar's eyes widened and she began thrashing once more, outraged,

"You mean to tell me that you were apart of RiverClan?!"

The second cat smirked, stepping on her hind legs as he kept her pinned to the ground.

"Didn't know ye were smart enough to register that. Ye seemed shocked to hear that cats of yer own Clan could go to the Dark Forest, Shimmerstar. But yes, ye are correct; we went here because we assisted Ghostfire in the Great Rebellion," the first tom snarled.

Great Rebellion?! These cats are still around?! She thought to herself, bewildered.

"How do you know who I am?!" She hissed, hiding the surprise in her eyes as she attempted to slash at his face.

"Please, the entire Dark Forest knows who you are. Whitestar warned us about you and the others. He said that you and a few others were capable of finding out our plans, but that it was you in particular we had to watch out for," the black tom spoke up.

"Stop wasting ye time on her, Nightshade. It's just makin' us more 'n more likely to get killed!" The first tom spat, moving toward Shimmerstar with unsheathed claws.

"Leave my sister alone!"

Hollowfrost slammed himself into the tom who kept Shimmerstar pinned, forcing him to let her go. Shimmerstar wasted no time in leaping to her paws and attacking the first tom, tucking her head down and butting into his chest. He fell backwards, tripping over his paws and tumbling to the ground. Hollowfrost and Nightshade were writhing on the ground, viciously clawing at each other. Shimmerstar slashed at the black tom, distracting him and allowing Hollowfrost to get to his paws. They locked eyes for a moment, giving each other a brief nod before springing back into battle.

Nightshade wasted no time in leaving, high-tailing his way back from where he came from. The first tom, however, wasn't about to give up so easily. He leaped toward Shimmerstar with outstretched claws, his eyes blazing. Hollowfrost stopped him, wrapping his front legs around the tom's neck and dragging him to the ground.

"If I were in a river, this would work a lot better," he grunted as he dug his claws into the tom's shoulder. The tom retaliated by slamming his hind legs into Hollowfrost's stomach, making the black-and-grey tom stumble backward. Shimmerstar slashed at his chest, leaving four deep furrows in his fur. The tom snarled at her before turning and fleeing. Shimmerstar helped her brother up, whose eyes were bright and smile wide.

"I haven't fought like that in moons! Not to mention, I haven't fought alongside you in forever either! Keep it up, I'm going to find some other Dark Forest cats to fight!" He exclaimed, grinning at her before disappearing back into the massive crowd of cats.

Where's Whitestar?!

Her thoughts were interrupted by a loud yowl. She turned her head to see a familiar white and ginger tom attempting to fend off three cats at once. Shimmerstar charged toward them, squarely leaping onto a dark tom's back and dragging him to the ground. She tore her claws through the tom's ear, leaving a deep gash. Splashface looked up toward her, flashing her a grateful glance before focusing back on the two other Dark Forest cats.

Shimmerstar sheathed her claws for a brief moment, landing a powerful blow on the side of the tom's face and sending him on his way. She turned on a mottled she-cat who was aiming for Splashface's neck. Shimmerstar sunk her teeth into the she-cat's scruff, dragging her off of her old mentor. The she-cat turned on her with a snarl, swiping at Shimmerstar's face. Shimmerstar hissed, pressing her paw into the she-cat's shoulder. She let out a loud yowl, trying to throw the former RiverClan leader off of her.

"Spottedheart! I need some help over here!" A dark tabby yowled, narrowly dodging a frontal strike from Splashface.

"I'm a bit occupied here!" Spottedheart snapped through clenched teeth. She leaped upward, forcing her shoulder blades into Shimmerstar's chest. She leaped back, attempting to catch her breath as Spottedheart regained her footing. They both charged each other, but at the last moment Spottedheart slid to the ground and slashed at Shimmerstar's stomach. Shimmerstar winced, digging her claws into the ground. She watched Spottedheart, quickly attacking as she tried to slide out the way she had come. She dug both of her claws into the mottled she-cat's shoulders which kept her from getting to her paws. Shimmerstar dug her hind claws into Spottedheart's spine, earning a loud yowl of pain from the pinned she-cat. With narrowed eyes, she released her and watched the Dark Forest warrior rapidly limp away.

The tabby burst past her, and Splashface chased after him before stopping. He turned back toward Shimmerstar, and she noticed the bright gleam in his eyes.

"Thanks back there. I taught you well, didn't I?" He grinned.

"You never lost your cockiness, you know that?" She rolled her eyes, smirking at him.

"Well it was nice fighting these foxhearts with you, but leave I must to scar more of them!"

Shimmerstar playfully scoffed, but her amusement was cut short when she saw a glimpse of white out of the corner of her eye. She spun around, fearlessly charging into the mass of fighting cats. She chased after Whitestar, but he was surprisingly fast. He dodged attacks from other cats with lightning fast movements, allowing him to quickly maneuver through the crowd. Up ahead, he briefly stopped to talk to a familiar grey tom before taking off and disappearing.

A cruel smile spread across Thistlefang's face as he spun back around and disappeared. Shimmerstar narrowed her eyes, taking off in the direction he left and forgot about Whitestar. She noticed him up ahead, crouched and moving toward a pale golden she-cat. Shimmerstar's eyes widened and her heart rate rapidly picked up as she leaped over and slid under cats who were occupied fighting or trying to attack her.

Thistlefang leaped into the air, squarely landing on Goldeneyes' back. He gripped her head with his front paws as he knocked her hind legs out from under her. Shimmerstar let out a choked cry, but was held back by a Dark Forest warrior. Goldeneyes rolled out of Thistlefang's way, rearing on her hind legs and slashing downward at his face. The grey tom fell back, stunned. Goldeneyes charged forward, sinking her teeth into his hind leg. Thistlefang snarled, yanking his leg free and leaping toward the pale she-cat. She had no time to move out of his way, and Thistlefang sank his teeth into her neck. He held her in place with his front legs, and the golden she-cat met Shimmerstar's pleading stare before she stopped struggling. She fell to the ground, motionless before slowly disappearing. The only thing that remained was a small pool of blood.

Shimmerstar burst forward, mindlessly attacking Thistlefang and forcing him to the ground. She dug her claws into his shoulder's her eyes blazing. He looked up at her, no trace of regret in his eyes.

"YOU QUARREL IS WITH ME, NOT MY MOTHER!" She snarled, pressing one paw to the tom's throat. He grinned, obviously satisfied.

"You may be angry now, but imagine how you'll feel when I tell you why I killed her," he said, his voice strained.

Shimmerstar removed her paw from his throat, but tightened her grip on his shoulders.

"What?"

"Whitestar kept telling us to strike you off guard somehow, and so I thought, why not? Something told me you'd be more vulnerable after watching your own mother die for the second time. It seems my hunch was correct!" He replied, faking glee in his voice. Shimmerstar stared down at him, her mouth slightly open. Thistlefang wasted no time in freeing himself from her grip, pushing her to the ground in return.

Goldeneyes was gone.

Again.

Gone before she could completely know her.

Her own mother.

Because of Thistlefang.

Because of what Whitestar had told them.

And she watched.

Again.

"I finally have you. You can't blind me, my stupid son isn't here to ruin my plans, it's just me and you," he snarled, a grin spreading across his face. Shimmerstar remained silent for the longest time, feeling drained of energy and motivation. It was deja vu. Who was next? Hollowfrost? Well, she wouldn't be here to see it. Shimmerstar stared up at him, her voice dull,

"Go ahead and kill me. I don't care anymore."

"Fine," Thistlefang snarled, raising his paw. He was preparing a death blow.

"Shimmerstar!" She heard Coonstar's voice somewhere to her right.

"Fight him!" Hollowfrost.

"We all know you're more than capable of it!" Splashface.

"You can't give up now! Not like you did last time!" Stormstar. His words stung, but she ignored it. Whitestar knew this would happen. He knew how vulnerable she was in depression.

He deliberately told them to make it happen again.

"YOU WILL GET UP, AND YOU WILL FIGHT HIM. I REFUSE TO WATCH YOU GO MAD ONCE MORE."

Thistlefang was dragged off of her, leaving her to lay on the ground in shock. All she saw were his blazing green eyes.

Whitestar?!
